Why drilling beats reading
Reading a line once builds recognition; playing it builds recall. The trainer forces recall: you must find the book move on an empty prompt, and only after a miss does it help. Mistakes are counted per run, so a “perfect” badge means you reproduced the whole line without a hint.
Start with the main line of one opening you actually play. Add variations only once the main line is automatic, and always ask why each move is played: the line notes and the full guide explain the ideas, which is what you will need when your opponent leaves the book.
Questions
How does the trainer work?
Pick an opening, a line and your colour. The board plays the opponent's moves and waits for yours. In Learn mode the moves are listed and a hint arrow appears after one wrong try; in Drill mode the moves are hidden and the arrow comes after two.
Where do the lines come from?
From the opening guides on this site. Every line is replayed by a chess engine library when the site is built, so a line with an illegal move cannot be published.
How should I use it?
Drill a line in Learn mode until you can play it without hints, switch to Drill mode, then come back a day later. Spaced repetition beats cramming. Your progress is stored in this browser.
Can I train my own repertoire?
Not yet. For now the trainer covers the main lines and key variations of eight major openings. Paste your own PGN on the analysis board to study anything else.
